The Home Gardens Project
Family gardens can produce significant food security and increased nutrition.
In 2021, Tikkun Eco Center started our Home Gardens Project, installing backyard gardens in the villages surrounding our farm. For low income families in Mexico, even a small home garden can provide significant amounts of healthy organic produce year round.
Home gardens increase food security, provide community resilience in crisis, and reduce nutrition related illness like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
Tikkun provides:
Soil and Compost
Raised bed construction where needed
Rooftop rainwater catchment tinacos where needed
Drip irrigation
Fencing
Seeds and Starter plants
Mulch
Follow up home visits and support
Working with the local village delegada, we find the right recipients who are serious about learning and caring for their garden. Then we build and install the garden, help with initial planting, and guide the new growers on their journey toward greater self sufficiency and health.
