TIKKUN INSTITUTE FOR ECOLOGY

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

The Tikkun Institute is a center for research, demonstration and education, dedicated to advancing regenerative ecology and the resilience of rural communities.

From Desertification to Regeneration:
Scalable Models for Regional Impact

The Tikkun Institute for Ecology is located in the semi-arid highlands of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.

Founded in 2008, our work is grounded in the principle of restoring ecological balance while empowering communities to steward their own lands, recognizing that water, soil, forests, and community food systems are interconnected and must be restored together.

Our region, the Altiplano RĂo Laja watershed, is experiencing severe aquifer depletion, water scarcity and toxic contamination, deforestation, erosion, biodiversity loss, and growing food insecurity. These challenges disproportionately affect the rural communities surrounding the historic center of San Miguel de Allende, who already struggle with poverty and declining agricultural livelihoods.

Our Planting for Change and Agua Para la Vida programs work in tandem. They integrate rainwater harvesting, watershed restoration, native reforestation and organic agroforestry into a scalable model. Our goal is to demonstrate that large-scale ecological and community restoration is both achievable and essential.

PLANTING FOR CHANGE

Planting for Change is a scaleable program to support rural communities in restoring ecological and economic resilience through native reforestation and agroforestry.

AGUA PARA LA VIDA

The Agua Para la Vida project restores abandoned bordos, the traditional community rainwater reservoirs in rural farming villages currently impacted by drought, toxic well water, and climate extremes.

TIKKUN EARTH SCHOOL

The Tikkun Earth School hosts student groups, Kindergarten through University, and international service learning groups. We invite young people to discover their role as stewards of Earth’s ecosystems, by engaging in ecological service.

OUR CENTER

The Tikkun Institute is a beautiful demonstration site offering education, workshops, volunteer opportunities and internships.

Tikkun Eco Center is located 30 minutes north of the center of San Miguel de Allende. In the past 18 years we have transformed our 3 hectares from dry scrub brush into an oasis of beauty and abundance.

Our off-grid center includes green building with adobe, extensive water catchment systems and ponds, organic gardens and orchard, bee hives, and thousands of trees, cactus, vines and flowers, which attract wildlife and seasonal migrations of Monarch butterflies!

OUR VISION

We believe it is a spiritual and moral duty to heal the damage to our world and to ensure an abundant and beautiful future for our children, our grandchildren, and all beings on Earth.

“You carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside of you.

Mother Earth is not just your environment.

In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer.”

- Thich Naht Hahn
